Minecraft Map (item) Help!?

ok so i made a map and i have filled it up completely so i went to go make more maps so i can explore more and still records my terrain, but when i made new maps they still showed the area i have aready doented and when i went out of the area and opened up a new map, no new terrain was being recorded on the new map! Help
