I have just failed my first semester in college, how bad is that?

Surely you must love yourself and your life. Nobody is responsible for shaping your life and career than yourself (even not your parents). If I had been in your place I would have done anything (pizza delivery boy etc..and not flesh trade) to earn little money and continue education. Your combination seems good enough for journalism, NGO, future MBA etc.
